An energy efficient barrel temperature control shroud, said to be the first of its kind in the extrusion industry, is said to increase the energy efficiency of a single screw extruder's temperature control system by up to 50%. This is said to be especially beneficial for higher temperature applications such as extrusion coating, cast film and tubing processes. The patented heater/cooler barrel shroud fits right over the barrel to create a thermal layer, preventing radiant heat losses, while a valve system that is pressure activated prevents convective losses. Retrofits are said to be straightforward on most extruders due to the simple design of the heater insulation package.

Waterjet rubber cutter A waterjet systems manufacturer is helping a Minnesota inventor make his mark on the world with Sand Traxx changeable imprint sandals which feature waterjet cut rubber components. A mold for the sandal's rubber characters allows Sand Traxx to improve its characters so they fit better into a slot on the bottom of the sandals. It also will minimize scrap. Unlike other imprint flip flops, Sand Traxx wearers can quickly change and customize their message by changing out the rubber letters, which are securely fastened to a recessed slot on the bottom of the sole. The molded rubber letters are cut apart using an environmentally friendly waterjet cutting system.

Mobile drum dumper The Tip-Tite mobile drum dumper allows dust-free transfer of bulk materials from drums into process equipment and storage vessels. Ready to plug in and run, the drum dumper is mounted on a mobile frame with quick-action floor jacks for stable operation anywhere in the plant. A hydraulic cylinder raises the drum carriage, which seals the drum rim against a discharge cone, after which a second hydraulic cylinder tips the carriage-hood assembly and drum, stopping at a predetermined dump angle of either 45, 60 or 90 degrees with a motion-dampening feature. As the assembly approaches its fully-tipped position, the outlet of the discharge cone mates with a gasketed receiving-ring inlet fitted to existing process equipment or to the lid of an optional hopper with integral pneumatic, tubular cable or flexible screw conveyor, creating a dust-tight seal. Once the discharge cone is seated against the gasket, a pneumatically-actuated slide gate valve opens, allowing material to enter the receiving vessel. The unit accommodates drums from 30 to 55 gallons (114 to 208 liters) weighing up to 750 pounds (340 kg) and measuring 36 to 48 inches (91 to 122 cm) in height. (Flexicon)

Weighing management
The SGP weighing management system is offered to engineers who deal with material waste, product composition problems, production interruptions or contamination on a daily basis. It is said to be an effective system designed to control every production step, allowing full traceability, and yielding up to 35% gains in productivity. The recipes are programmed in a central computer and delivered to the SGP system. The ingredients are then weighed and the resulting values are automatically stored and displayed on the screen. There is no disruption on the weighing process during the feeding of the storage bins, which are loaded from behind. The system is said to protect the operator throughout the entire process. The ingredients are stored in special plastic (PE) or stainless steel (FI-FO) containers. The risk of contamination during weighing and exchanges is said to be minimal. The system is said to reduce accidents and repetitive strain injury risk as a result of using the best operator's ergonomics. The system allows the entire process to be strictly controlled and monitored. Information is stored in the company's database, which can be delivered at any time, partially or complete, gradually or all at once.

Non-contact measurement
Video Gauge 5.3 is an advanced software tool that manages the control, capture, processing and analysis functions for all of the company's non-contact measurement systems. The fundamental principles behind the software are often referred to as motion tracking and digital image correlation (DIC), although Video Gauge has been independently benchmarked to be an order of magnitude more accurate than other image based measurement software, according to the company. Workspace dimensions measure 36" wide by 60" deep by 36" high. Additive manufacturing The mobile Kuka IIWA (intelligent industrial work assistant) seven-axis robot links injection molding with additive manufacturing. This is designed for autonomous human/robot cooperation and does not require a safety enclosure. In the manufacture of scissors, the IIWA removes the workpiece carrier with the scissors from the conveyor belt of the injection molding cell. In order to initiate the next production step, the scissors are identified via their DM code by means of a scanner. The Freeformer features a Euromap 67 interface which allows it to communicate with the seven-axis robotic system. The cover is opened and closed fully automatically, enabling the robot to load and unload the build chamber. The Freeformer finishes the scissors with individual 3D lettering in polypropylene (PP). Before they eventually reach the visitor, the finished scissors undergo a final quality check.
