Rubber injection presses
VS Class rubber injection presses in a four-tiebar design feature clamping forces between 1,600 kN and 8,000 kN, and are said to be characterized by their space-saving design. The ergonomic operating height is achieved with the telescope closing system (standard for machines with 4,500 kN clamping force and larger), thus a platform or pit becomes obsolete. Due to the use of a large clamping plunger underneath the movable plate, an even pressure distribution is said to be guaranteed. Fast opening and closing times are achieved by means of two diagonally arranged, external high speed cylinders. The use of the most rigid machine platens, combined with a minimum bore in the fixed top bolster for the injection nozzle, is said to guarantee a high resistance against platen deflection. The generously sized tiebar spacing makes the use of large standard heating plates possible and also provides the opportunity of working with enlarged optional heating platens.

Dual Drive crackermill system for tire recycling The Artisan Dual Drive crackermill is said to be recognized worldwide for the development and production of the dual roll technology that revolutionized and modernized the production of ground rubber material. The machine is capable of processing tire crumb as well as other rubber materials. Past improvements to the existing crackermill technology resulted in a modern, efficient crackermill with dramatically improved performance characteristics. Decoupling the rolls is said to have revolutionized the mill. This allowed the rolls to be driven independently at variable speeds to create the rolling and cracking of the rubber known as the friction ratio. As the friction ratio was increased, the mill's production and size reduction performance capabilities were said to be greatly enhanced. Another performance plus involved improvements to the way the machine is driven. The dual drive mill uses a regeneration process which allows the machine to lower its energy requirements and operate more efficiently. This process is controlled by programmable, fully integrated logic controls that increase production rates while cutting power consumption. This new fine grind mill system is said to provide the company with a complete tire processing solution from initial size reduction and steel reclamation down to fine grind rubber powders ranging from 10 to 120 mesh. The firm is now making the Dual Drive crackermill system available as part of a complete tire processing package or as an addition to an existing operation. Customized cartridge collector reduces downtime Trostel’s Polymer Compounding Division, Whitewater, WI, is said to be a world leader in the production of rubber and elastomeric compounds used in the manufacture of custom sealing and rubber molded products. With the opening of its new state-of-the-art, 33,000 sq. ft. compounding facility in 1994, Trostel earned recognition as the world’s premier rubber compounder. Trostel’s milling equipment, a secondary operation in compounding rubber, utilizes four large fan-cooled DC motors to turn the rolls that work the compound. When a compound batch leaves the mixer, it drops on to the milling rollers, creating a large cloud of conductive dust. Cooling fans were inadvertently pulling this dust from the ambient air into the DC motors. In a relatively short time (generally three months), this conductive dust would short out the motors, causing trips and an eventual complete motor burnout. As a result, each motor required a complete rebuild once every quarter, costing between $40,000 and $50,000 per year. Additionally, there is significant downtime for the six to eight hours required to replace each motor. Trostel’s dust problem also affected the bottom line in other ways, says Mike Vida, facility engineer for Trostel. “As the four motors came close to their fail point, they would trip more frequently, directly affecting product quality as well as system throughput. We did have an ambient air dust collection system, but it was not effective in keeping the cooling fans from sucking the conductive dust into the motors.” Trostel's operations team began to look for a solution that would keep conductive compound dust from being pulled into the DC motors by the cooling fans; significantly improve indoor air quality and reduce employee risk; drastically reduce motor maintenance and downtime costs; pay for itself in 12 months; and fit into a very small space. After talking to a number of dust collection equipment providers, the team was referred to the local United Air Specialists representative. Together they looked at a variety of alternatives. Following a thorough study, the UAS representative recommended use of two SCA cartridge dust collection systems. The SCA units were mounted above the milling operation to collect the conductive dust and supply clean air through direct ducting to the mill motor intakes. This continuous supply of clean air at the motor intakes drastically reduced the potential for the motors to collect contaminated air. The compact, ceiling-mounted SCA units solved Trostel’s major installation challenge, a lack of available floor space that prohibited placement of equipment anywhere but the The SCA cartridge dust collection system features an online self-cleaning system. Instead of simply collecting dust onto filters, the SCA captures contaminants and “pulses” them off into drawers below. A showerhead-like nozzle ensures even distribution of air to maximize reverse air cleaning on the entire length of each cartridge. The result is longer filter life, fewer filter changes and cleaner air. Each unit is equipped with four lightweight, removable drawers for easy disposal of collected material. Also, for simplified maintenance, there are “QuickSeal” filter access doors for easy removal and replacement of cartridges, as well as correct and constant compression of filter seals.
