6/3/2020 - Akron, OH - The Rubber Division, ACS, announces its June course and webinar schedule. Essentials of Rubber Technology, and Essentials of Silicone Rubber will be held June 11. Mixing and Testing for Compound Consistency, and Setting Up a Rubber Molding Process will be held June 12. Rubber Explained, with a lowered price of $200, will be held June 17. Thermoplastic and Functional Elastomers, a new course, will be held June 29. Communicating for Scientific Success, a new course that is free for Rubber Division members, will be held June 30. June webinars, which are free for Rubber Division members, will include: Utilizing Laboratory Equipment for Efficient Development and Problem Solving, a new webinar, on June 24, and General Considerations in Failure Analysis of Rubber and Elastomers on June 25. All courses are free for student members. The Rubber Explained Course, instructed by Erick Sharp of ACE Products & Consulting, LLC, will be held June 17 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. EST. This course will be offered again on July 21 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. This is a one-day course designed for sales and executives working in the rubber industry. Centered around practical explanations and basic fundamentals, this is said to be the perfect course for the non-technical individual. The course will cover the following topics: key raw materials used in rubber compounding; what a rubber formulation looks like; costing a rubber formulation; types of mixing processes; types of fabrication processes; interpreting a test specification; interpreting test results; and basic testing methods. This course has had its price reduced to $200. Communicating for Scientific Success, instructed by Dr. Fred Meadows and free for members will be held June 30 from 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. EST. This course is for scientists and engineers who would like to improve on communicating in technical work environments where several modes of communication are routinely used on a daily basis. The course is designed for individuals working in or aspiring to work in a wide range of environments, e.g., research and development, quality control, private industry, government and academia. This course is highly interactive and engaging where attendees will work through common scenarios within a technical work environment. Participants will learn to “get the big picture” and select the most suitable communication approach for common situations and audiences. The following is insight from Toby Reid, a participant in the recent Soft Skills for Scientific Success course led by Dr. Meadows: "Soft skills are so easy to overlook especially early on in your career, and they can be a key factor in how well you perform and enjoy any future roles. I cannot thank Fred and Rubber Division, ACS, enough for taking the time to put together this course and reiterating just how important these vastly untaught skills are. The personality and passion that Fred shows when teaching clearly shone through, and the interactive and personal nature of the course was unlike anything I had experienced digitally in the past. I think each one of us course participants pushed ourselves beyond our comfort zones and are better for it. I am looking forward to tackling the reading materials that he recommended and can't wait to look back upon myself and see how much better a person I am both personally and professionally as a result of what I learned."
