39th Tire Society Conference on Tire Science and Technology held virtually

  9/16/2020 - Akron, OH - This year’s 39th Tire Society Conference on Tire Science and Technology will appear quite different from the prior 38, as it will be held entirely virtually, due to the safety imperatives of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet the conference will maintain the same expected content and quality, with 27 original works of tire technology, presented by the authors, and a special topic paper on the 40+ year history of the Tire Society, as well as a keynote address, plenary address, invited lecture and panel discussion. Presenters will be answering questions live, and, in view of the virtual nature, the conference will be for the first time held over five days, September 28 through October 2, in the morning hours Eastern Time, facilitating global attendance. As the non-profit Tire Society will not be incurring the usual expenses of its in-person conference, the savings are being passed along to the members, with the registration fee barely one third the usual cost. This year’s theme is “Intelligent Transportatio,n” and as such, it will be kicked off by a keynote address by Chris Helsel, senior vice president and chief technology officer of Goodyear, titled, "Intelligent transportation: Smart mobility solutions from the tire industry." The importance of the topic is that tire manufacturers must embrace changing consumer preference and society’s digital transformation as they consider the current and future mobility ecosystem. With the shift from tires having a "physical footprint" to also adding a "digital footprint" that can share operational data with the vehicle, users and other systems, new opportunities exist through the tire to drive intelligent and sustainable transportation. The conference will also be informed by a plenary lecture by Dr. Giorigio Rizzoni, the Ford Motor Company Chair in ElectroMechanical Systems at the Ohio State University. Dr. Rizzoni chairs the University Center for Automotive Research (CAR), with his research activities related to modeling, control and diagnosis of advanced propulsion systems, vehicle fault diagnosis and prognosis, electrified power trains and energy storage systems, vehicle safety and intelligence, and sustainable mobility. This is followed by the invited lecture by Ross Tessien, principal at Electricwaze LLC and a noted technical writer and mechanical engineer with 43 patents who publishes the Seeking Alpha blog for investors, focusing on topics such as electric vehicles. Rounding out the week will be a live and lively panel discussion by industry notables. As always, the heart of the program is the schedule of presentations on original works illuminating topics on tire performances such as rolling resistance, noise and traction, experimental technology, simulation, material constitutive mechanics and multi-scale modeling, vehicle interactions and, of course, intelligent tires.
